An official Product Safety NZ notice concerns Potentially Asbestos Impacted Fire Doors- sold by Pacific Door Systems Limited (PDS) - 19 August 2026 update. Pacific Door Systems Limited (PDS) recently became aware of a contamination issue involving asbestos fibres impacting one of the categories of fire-rated door ‘cores’ (known as ‘FRB board’ or ‘FRB core’) previously used by PDS in production of Pyropanel fire-rated doors. The FRB board is manufactured by a third party outside of New Zealand. PDS wishes to stress that the FRB board does not contain asbestos by design. Instead, this is a contamination event in relation to which an explanation and more information is being sought from the third-party manufacturer. It continues to appear that the contamination event as it has impacted FRB board is not ‘uniform’ and therefore should only have affected a portion of the fire-rated doors within the categorisation that are the subject of the recall, with investigations ongoing including as to the precise time period at issue. The 'date range this product was sold' that is listed further below is a placeholder at present. PDS has commissioned testing to be carried out on a significant volume of doors over coming periods, the results of which are expected to assist PDS to determine any appropriate adjustments to the period of sale/supply in relation to which the recall applies. Please note that the recall applies to doors in the category the subject of the recall 'for which impact of the contamination issue cannot be ruled out'. In this context, in addition to assisting PDS to determine any appropriate adjustments to the period of sale/supply in relation to which the recall applies, the above-mentioned testing program should also confirm whether the specific doors the subject of the tests are impacted or not, so as to limit application of the remedy to only those doors that are confirmed as impacted. PDS will make any appropriate updates to this recall notice to reflect outcomes from the testing program and related assessments in that regard, as well as communicating directly with customers on those aspects. The hazard arising from the contamination event is potential exposure to asbestos fibres when ‘invasive’ type work is being performed on doors in the category the subject of the recall (such as in the nature of door hardware installation), where impact of the contamination issue on the doors in question cannot be ruled out. For completeness, WorkSafe New Zealand has confirmed our understanding that for fire-rated doors already installed with the FRB board fully encapsulated, those doors, if left intact, pose no to negligible risk of asbestos exposure and, accordingly, we understand there is no health and safety imperative for the intact doors to be removed and replaced. Potentially impacted doors for which installation works are complete and thus the fire tag (label) has been issued, including relating to door hardware, are therefore not being recalled. We refer to these as Category C doors under the 'What to do' heading. Published 2025-10-07.
What to do now
Customers who have purchased any of PDS’ fire-rated doors can check their order details, or enquire with PDS directly using the details provided in this notice, to confirm whether any of purchased doors are part of the relevant product ranges. PDS has contacted all customers to whom, based on its records, fire-rated doors have been supplied where those doors fall into the category the subject of the recall (if you believe you have purchased affected doors, but not been contacted already, please enquire with PDS using the details in this notice). As noted in those communications where relevant, affected customers should: Handle any doors in the potentially impacted categories as if they could contain asbestos, out of an abundance of caution. Not carry out invasive works on the doors until impact of the contamination event has been ruled out, or the doors have been replaced. Share this information with relevant contractors and personnel on site, including (for example) door hardware installers. Where the doors have not yet been installed, store them in a location where they cannot be damaged. As noted above, PDS will then communicate with customers directly on the outcomes from the testing program and related assessments it is conducting to determine any appropriate adjustments to the period of sale/supply in relation to which the recall applies, and which doors can be confirmed as impacted. For completeness, although not being recalled, the guidance from WorkSafe New Zealand is that for Category C doors (i.e, potentially impacted doors for which installation works are complete and thus the fire tag (label) has been issued), the relevant PCBU/s having control over the premises must: adopt a blanket asbestos presence presumption for asbestos risk management purposes; and update their asbestos registers and asbestos management plans accordingly (or create these for premises that previously had no asbestos present).
