10 things to check before buying any product for your child

Run through these before the money leaves your hand — most of them take under a minute.

   Check it hasn't been recalled

   Search the product, brand or model on RecallScope (or the official agency site) before you buy, especially for second-hand items.

   Look for the safety/standards mark

   E.g. a recognised safety certification for your country (toys, car seats, sleep products).

   Check for small parts & choking hazards

   For under-3s, anything that fits through a toilet-roll tube is a choking risk.

   Watch for button batteries & magnets

   Make sure battery compartments are screw-secured; loose button batteries and small magnets are among the most dangerous hazards.

   Confirm age suitability

   Buy to your child's age and stage, not ahead of it; age labels are safety guidance, not just marketing.

   Check straps, buckles & stability

   For car seats, high chairs, strollers and furniture: secure harnesses, no tip-over risk, anchor furniture to the wall.

   Read the sleep-safety basics

   For cribs, bassinets and loungers: firm flat surface, no soft bedding, follow the product's safe-sleep instructions.

   Check materials & chemicals

   Avoid strong chemical smells; look for non-toxic / phthalate-free labelling on items a child mouths.

   Register the product

   Fill in the manufacturer's registration card / online form so you're contacted directly if it's ever recalled.

    Keep the receipt & note the batch/lot

    So you can quickly check “am I affected?” and get a refund or replacement if a recall happens.
