An official Product Safety NZ notice concerns SONY VAIO Laptop Battery Packs VGP-BPS26. Originally recalled March 2016, updated February 2017 due to additional manufacturing issue. Contamination in the battery may cause it to short circuit and overheat. If your battery pack overheats, it may pose potential fire and burn hazards. Published 2016-11-25.
What to do now
Check if you have a battery with an affected Serial Number by using the Sony online battery checker. If you checked your battery pack before December 2016, please also recheck the serial number due to an additional issue. If your battery pack is affected please remove it from your laptop, call Sony to arrange a free replacement battery and use your computer with the supplied AC adaptor in the interim.
