An official Product Safety NZ notice concerns Digital Notepads. These products are being recalled on the basis that they do not appear to align with the guidance provided by New Zealand’s button battery product safety policy statement of 2018, posing a risk of choking, severe internal burn injuries or death to young children if they gain access to the button/coin batteries and swallow them or place them inside their body. Severe or fatal injuries can happen in 2 hours or less, and consumers may be unaware that these products contain button batteries. Published 2024-06-20.

What to do now

All affected customers have been notified - customers were notified to the effect of: Consumers should immediately cease using the Subject Products and store them out of reach of children. Thereafter, consumers should dispose of the Subject Products at an appropriate waste disposal which permits the disposal of products containing batteries - information detailing appropriate battery disposal providers can be found at: https://www.wasteminz.org.nz/nz-facilities-that-collect-batteries. Consumers who have purchased these products are able to receive a full refund in respect of their purchase(s) from the Supplier.
