An official Product Safety NZ notice concerns Cavius CV4002 wireless Carbon Monoxide alarm – sealed- 10 years battery. There are European Standards that relate to carbon monoxide alarm triggering – relevantly BS EN 50291-1:2018. The European Standard is not a mandatory standard in New Zealand, Australia or Europe Carrier Denmark is aware that the original manufacturer and supplier, Cavius Aps, conducted testing in June 2018, which reported the product was compliant with BS EN 50291-1:2018. However, subsequent internal tests carried out in 2023 by Carrier Denmark showed that the response time for the alarm triggering of some product tested was after the time limits requested standard BS EN 50291-1:2018 for two levels of PPM (50 PPM and 100 PPM). Additionally, the response time at 300 PPM for a small number of products tested was a maximum of 4 minutes instead of the European Standard of 3minutes for 300 PPM. There has been no incident reported in New Zealand since the product was first placed on the New Zealand market in November 2019 The issue with response time mainly occurs at low levels of PPM (50 PPM and 100 PPM) and the alarm still triggers well before the time of exposure would accumulate to a mix of carbon monoxide in the hemoglobin (COHb) of a person above 5%. As noted above, the response time at 300 PPM for a small number of products was a maximum of 4 minutes instead of 3 minutes. In this instance as well, the alarm still triggers well before the time of exposure would accumulate to a COHb of a person above 5%. In general, carbon monoxide gas can present a danger for individuals if inhaled either at high concentration level or for a long period of time. Carrier Denmark’s internal assessments indicate that the most likely severe health effect that may occur in healthy adults, as a result of a delay in the alarm being triggered and any consequential exposure to low levels of PPM, is a headache. The product is not designed or marketed to fully safeguard individuals with specific medical conditions as specified expressly in the EN 50291- 1:2018, which is mentioned on the packaging thus the impact on persons with a medical condition is unknown.
