An official Product Safety NZ notice concerns 2013-2019 Trek Kickster (Children's balance bicycle). The clamp that holds the steer tube in place may break when over-torqued. If the steer tube clamp breaks, the handlebars can come off the bicycle, and the child can fall resulting in minor scrapes and bruising. Published 2019-07-25.
What to do now
Stop riding the bicycle until a dealer has inspected the bike and replaced both the steer tube clamp and seat post clamp (they are interchangeable). Contact your Trek dealer to organise a time for the repair. After the repair is completed you also receive an in-store credit of $30.44 to use toward any Trek or Bontrager merchandise plus a credit towards a bell with a retail value up to $24.35. The credit is good through to 31 December 2019.
