An official Product Safety NZ notice concerns 14 piece Sand Castle Building Set and Blue, Green and Pink Magic Sand - sold at Kmart - SUPERSEDED. Note: 4th December 2025: This notice has been superseded by Kmart to remove three of the products from the recall. A separate notice has been published for the 14 piece sandcastle building set A recall concluded notice has been published for the Blue, Green and Pink Magic Sand Original recall content - SUPERSEDED: The product is being recalled because samples have tested positive for tremolite asbestos. The product may cause a risk to health as asbestos has been detected in some samples after laboratory testing. Importantly, respirable asbestos has not been detected in any of the tested samples. The release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur in its current state, unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising. The risk that any asbestos found, that is likely to be airborne or fine enough for inhalation, is low. Published 2025-11-15.
What to do now
Original recall content - SUPERSEDED: Stop using the products immediately. Wear disposable gloves and a mask and either return in the original tub or place the sand in a heavy-duty plastic bag and double tape it securely and keep it out of reach of children. Do not dispose of the products in general waste. Before removing any asbestos, talk to your local council to find out: where to find a tip (rubbish dump) that accepts asbestos waste, and how to transport your asbestos waste to the tip We recommend that you call your local council several days ahead to let them know that you are disposing of asbestos waste, so they can prepare. Immediate advice for workplaces: If the product is in a sealed container move it to a secure location away from people. If the sand is currently being used in your workplace, please instruct everyone to leave the area, block it off and make sure it is not accessible. Do not vacuum or sweep floors where there is sand, or attempt to clean it up. Contact a licensed asbestos assessor or removalist for immediate advice and support on your specific situation. Details of Class A licensed removalists are available in the Asbestos Removal Licence Holders Register: Asbestos removal licence holders · Online services. Do not return to the affected area until the extent of contamination is established, and after the area is remediated by an expert. If individuals are currently using the sand, they should put it down and relocate to a sand-free, well-ventilated area. If you are an educational facility and have identified that the sand has been used at your site, please notify the Ministry of Education.
