An official Health Canada notice concerns Essencia basil and essencia bay laurel essential oils recalled. Health Canada's sampling and evaluation program has determined that the recalled product contains methyl eugenol above the maximum concentration in the Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist. Methyl eugenol is prohibited as a pure ingredient on the Hotlist due to its potential for carcinogenicity but is permitted as a naturally occurring component in botanical extracts with specific limits depending on the product type. As of February 24, 2026, the company has received no reports of incidents in Canada, and no reports of injuries. Published 2026-03-04.
What to do now
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and return it to Homeocan for a refund. For more information, consumers can contact Homeocan by telephone at 514-256-6303 or 1-800-556-0824, or by email at serviceclient@homeocan.ca. Please note that, in addition to the requirements of the Cosmetic Regulations, the Food and Drugs Act (FDA) prohibits the sale of cosmetics that are either made with hazardous substances, or under unsanitary conditions, to users in Canada. Health Canada would like to remind consumers to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
