An official ACCC notice concerns Rheem 4 Star Gas Water Heater & Vulcan Freeloader 4 Star Gas Water Heater. There is a remote possibility of smoke and/or fire damage within the heater cabinet if the insulation comes in contact with the burner. This would normally self-extinguish due to use of fire retardant materials. However, under certain conditions it can lead to a total failure of the water heater. Published 2012-05-21.
What to do now
The water heater can continue to be used and we ask consumers to ensure that no combustibles are stored against or immediately adjacent to the water heater. Consumers are requested to contact our recall hotline on 1800 063018 to register their product for rectification work.
